🎁 Few days to Christmas. The most-wanted gifts sell out first.

The 12 gifts teens actually want this Christmas (and 3 to rethink)

We read the reviews, tracked the drops and checked what Americans are searching for right now. Here is what will get a real reaction on Christmas morning, what to buy exactly, and when to give it a miss.

By the GiftHeat editors Updated 7 min read

Teen wish lists are short and very specific. They don't want "a water bottle", they want a FreeSip in a colour nobody at school has. They don't want "cards", they want the Pokémon set that sold out on launch day. Get the exact thing right and you're a hero; get it slightly wrong and it ends up in a drawer.

So for each gift below we tell you which version to buy, what owners actually complain about, who it's wrong for, and what to get instead. We also show how many people in the US searched for it last month, because that is the most honest signal we know of what's wanted right now.

1Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle

Nintendo Switch 2

Still the most-wanted big gift of the year, and the bundle is the way to buy it.

A year after launch, Nintendo has sold 23.68 million of them, and the library finally has the games teens ask for by name: Mario Kart World with up to 24 racers, Pokémon Pokopia, Tomodachi Life. GameChat lets friends talk while they play, which is half the point at this age. It also just got Switch Sports Resort (October 22), so there is something new to unwrap with it.

Get this one

The Mario Kart World bundle: console, game and three months of Nintendo Switch Online in one box. That membership matters, because GameChat doesn't work without it.

What owners and reviewers say

  • Screen and hardware. The Verge's review praises the larger 7.9-inch 1080p screen, the improved dock and the new Joy-Con as clear upgrades over the original Switch. The Verge
  • Battery life. Battery life is the recurring weak point: Nintendo rates it at roughly 2 to 6.5 hours depending on the game, so a teen playing on the bus will want a charger nearby. Nintendo
  • Expansion cards. Nintendo's support page says the console only takes microSD Express cards, not the older microSD cards many families already own. Nintendo

2Owala FreeSip 24 oz insulated stainless steel bottle

Owala FreeSip

The bottle of this school year. Fortune calls it to Gen Z what the Stanley was to millennials.

The #owala hashtag has passed 272 million views on TikTok, and the appeal is half drinking, half collecting: limited colour drops sell out and rarely come back. The FreeSip lets you sip through the built-in straw or tip it back and swig, and the spout stays covered in a bag.

Get this one

The 24 oz in stainless steel. It fits a standard cup holder and a backpack side pocket; the 32 and 40 oz don't fit average cup holders. For extra points, pick one of the limited Target holiday colours (Cozy Does It, Bear Hug, Toile Be Home, Take a Bow) if you can still find one.

About 673K US searches in September 2026, and rising.

What owners and reviewers say

  • Two ways to drink. Good Housekeeping's reviewer and testers liked being able to sip through the built-in straw or tilt the bottle back and swig from the wider spout, and one tester was surprised by how much she liked the spout. The covered spout was also seen as a plus for travel hygiene. Good Housekeeping
  • Looks like an accessory. A tester said the FreeSip looked pretty to carry, like an accessory, and the coloured straw makes it easy to tell whose bottle is whose when several share a house. This matches the collect-the-colours behaviour Fortune describes. Good Housekeeping
  • Dents and fails drop tests. In Good Housekeeping's lab, the FreeSip kept cold water well (it warmed by 13 degrees F over a day) but dented slightly on the bottom and leaked after being dropped three times from three feet. It did not break. Good Housekeeping
  • Lid needs real cleaning. The lid has crevices, so a bottle brush is recommended, and a silicone tab has to come out for cleaning. The reviewer forgot to put it back once and the bottle leaked until she did. Good Housekeeping

3Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box

Pokémon TCG 30th Celebration

The trading-card set of the year, and teens are the ones driving the boom.

Circana says toy sales grew 17% in the first half of 2026, led by trading cards, and 12 to 17 year olds were the fastest-growing group (+33%). The 30th Celebration set launched on September 16 to long lines at Target, Best Buy and Barnes & Noble. Every pack holds one of 30 Pikachu illustrations, so there is always something to chase.

About 673K US searches in September 2026, and rising.

What owners and reviewers say

  • Hard to find at launch. USA Today reported long lines at Target, Best Buy and Barnes & Noble on launch day, with Pokemon Center packs, boxes and bundles sold out and Walmart running a drawing for some products. USA Today
  • Pikachu in every pack, big hits are rare. A community tally of 4,063 packs found one Pikachu in every pack, a Double Rare about 1 in 4 packs, an Illustration Rare about 1 in 5 and a Special Illustration Rare about 1 in 20. The Pokemon Company does not publish pull rates, so these are fan counts, not official odds. Bill's Archive
  • Nostalgia cards that are not for tournament play. Thirty classic cards return with foil treatment as part of the set, and the Pokemon Company's media alert says they are not Standard-legal, so the set suits collectors more than tournament players. Pokémon

4Jellycat Bashful Beige Bunny

Jellycat Bashful Bunny

Not just a baby gift. Jellycat has a cult following among teens, and it's growing.

NBC Select describes fans who are babies, teens and adults alike, and Jellycat bag-charm searches jumped 790% at the August 2025 back-to-school peak. The company's 2025 sales rose 43% while US plush sales overall fell 8%. Teens like it for the same reasons adults do: it's soft, a bit silly and genuinely hard to find in the right colour.

What owners and reviewers say

  • Softness and shape. NBC's reviewer says the fur is dense but not stiff and the bunny is plush enough to hug without feeling firm. NBC Select
  • Holds up to washing. The same reviewer has washed a five-year-old Bashful Bunny a number of times and says it still looks great and keeps its shape. NBC Select
  • Popular colours sell out. The review notes that seasonal variations show up and sell out fast, so the exact colour a teen wants may not be available. NBC Select

5UGG Tasman II Slipper, Chestnut

UGG Tasman II

The Tasman has quietly replaced the classic Ugg boot, and it works indoors and out.

British Vogue wrote in April that the Tasman had "exploded" as the new go-to, and UGG built its 2026 back-to-school campaign around students with the Tasman in the lineup. New versions keep landing, from the Western Tasman in August to the JW Anderson collaboration in October.

  • Sizing is inconsistent. UGG says the Tasman runs true to size in whole sizes only, but some Nordstrom reviewers say they went up a size, so a gift receipt is wise. Nordstrom

6HydroJug Traveler 40 oz (Black)

HydroJug Traveler

The Owala's biggest rival, for teens who want a big cup with a handle.

Gen Z trend-watcher Casey Lewis put the Traveler on her list of the top 15 Gen Z holiday gifts last year, and the flip-up straw is why. Like Owala, it's bought for its looks: limited patterns go viral and sell out. A new limited collection, After Dark, drops on October 24 with no restock.

About 1M US searches in September 2026, and rising.

What owners and reviewers say

  • The flip straw wins people over. A Country Living reviewer liked the concealed flip-up straw and large handle, and found the rubber base quiet on hard surfaces. House Beautiful's tester also preferred the concealed straw for hygiene and liked the colours and patterns better than the rival bottle she compared it to. House Beautiful
  • Leak-resistant, not leakproof. Country Living's reviewer knocked it over with the straw closed and got only a few drops; with the straw open it spills. HydroJug's own FAQ says it is leakproof only with the straw down and is not splash- or spill-resistant. Country Living
  • Cold lasts, but not forever. In Country Living's test, 10 ice cubes in cold water lasted about 7 hours. In House Beautiful's overnight test the ice melted but the water stayed cold, though it warmed up faster through the day than the BrüMate it was compared with. House Beautiful

7Dyson Airwrap i.d. multi-styler and dryer (Plum/Copper special edition)

Dyson Airwrap i.d.

The "someday" gift on a lot of teen lists. If you're doing a big one, this is it.

It curls with air rather than a hot barrel, and the i.d. version connects to an app that times each curl for their hair type, which helps beginners. For Christmas 2026 Dyson released a limited Plum and Copper edition that comes with a presentation case. Dyson.com shows 4.7 out of 5 from more than 23,000 ratings.

About 301K US searches in September 2026, and climbing toward its December peak.

What owners and reviewers say

  • App-timed curls help beginners. Good Housekeeping says the app lowers the learning curve for newcomers, though its Beauty Lab director calls the app a nice extra rather than essential. The Guardian's tester liked not having to count down before releasing each curl. Good Housekeeping
  • Better curling than the Shark. The Guardian's tester gave the Airwrap i.d. the win for curling: it offers barrels in three widths and two shapes (including a conical one that gets closer to the roots), the barrel direction switches with a button, and its longer barrel gripped more hair. For brush attachments, she preferred the Shark. The Guardian
  • Not every hair type gets the same result. Good Housekeeping warns that thick, straight or curl-resistant hair may not hold a curl, and that type 4 hair may find it does not get hot enough to smooth. It also notes the attachment sets can mismatch your needs and the blade concentrator iron is sold separately. Good Housekeeping

8Kindle Colorsoft (redesigned 2026 Kindle family)

Kindle Colorsoft

BookTok made reading cool again, and this is the Kindle for comics and illustrated books.

The LA Times reports Kindle sales at their highest in over a decade, driven by younger readers, with most new buyers getting their first Kindle. Amazon even designed its new page-turn remote, the Kindle Click, with BookTok in mind. The 2026 Colorsoft ships October 28.

What owners and reviewers say

  • Best for comics and illustrated books. Engadget's review of the first-gen Colorsoft found it great for comics and illustrated books, with color that is less crisp than a tablet, and said a standard Kindle is the better choice for mostly text. Engadget
  • Slight text softness and color page-turn flutter. Wired's review of the first-gen model found text slightly fuzzier than on a Paperwhite and some flutter when turning color pages or zooming, with up to two months of battery and no page-turn buttons or stylus. Wired
  • 2026 model keeps the same screen tech. Gizmodo's 2026 hands-on says the refresh brings a flush screen and a more uniform plastic body with the power button moved, while the chip, storage and color e-paper technology are unchanged, so the older reviews still apply to the display. Gizmodo

9Loop Quiet 2 earplugs

Loop Quiet 2

The gift they won't think to ask for and will use every single day.

Earplugs have become an accessory: Vogue reports Gen Z buying design-led pairs, and Loop has been the hearing partner at Coachella and Glastonbury. • Softest and quietest in the range. Hearing Tracker's lab and real-life test describes the Quiet 2 as the softest Loop model and the one that gives maximum quiet, suited to sleep, study and travel. HearingTracker

10Fuggler Originals "Sir Belch" plush (22 cm)

Fugglers

Ugly on purpose, and that is exactly why teens love them.

Which? lists Fugglers among the toy trends of 2026, pointing to the meme-culture humour teens respond to, and the 9-inch Fugg Stars range won a Hero Toy award at this year's Toy Fair. They are the anti-Labubu: human teeth, odd eyes, very soft. ZURU, which makes them now, designs several ranges for teen fans and adult collectors.

Influenster reviewers across the Fuggler line praise how soft the plush is, the hand-finished teeth, and that it works as a desk or shelf piece that is easy to store. The page shows 4.89 out of 5 from 47 reviews, but it covers the whole line, not one character. Influenster
  • The ugliness is the point. A collector writing in the 34th Street Magazine says ugliness is the essence of the product, with hundreds of variations built on human-like teeth, bloodshot eyes and a button hole on the back. She notes that even in collabs the plush keeps the softness of a stuffed animal. 34th Street

11Ninja CREAMi 7-in-1 Ice Cream Maker (NC301)

Ninja Creami

For the teen who lives on TikTok recipes and protein ice cream.

The Creami went viral for protein ice cream and copycat pints, and it's still all over food TikTok. What owners and reviewers say

  • Creamy results from a frozen pint. Good Housekeeping's lab made ice cream and gelato that came out creamy and scoopable without extra freezing, and home testers liked how fast it processed a pint (roughly 4 minutes) and having control over ingredients. Good Housekeeping
  • 24-hour wait. Tom's Guide tried a pint after 14 hours and said it turned out like melted frozen yogurt; the reviewer says to trust the 24-hour freeze and that it is not for instant gratification. Tom's Guide
  • Loud. Good Housekeeping testers likened the noise to a blender, and the Guardian's tester measured 80-90 dB for a newer Creami model for three to five minutes; some recipes also needed an extra spin to get smooth. Good Housekeeping

3 crazes to rethink

These were the hottest teen gifts of the last two years. They aren't bad gifts. But search interest has fallen hard, and unless one is literally on their list, the alternative is the better buy.

  • Stanley Quencher H2.0 FlowState Tumbler 40 oz

Stanley cup 70% below its peak in searches

The Stanley Quencher went from an outdoor-gear niche item to a status accessory after a shopping blog, The Buy Guide, championed it; Fast Company reports Stanley's revenue grew from $73 million in 2019 to an estimated $750 million in 2023, and shoppers camped at Target for a Valentine's color drop in January 2024. Since then the water-bottle category has cooled: Circana saw year-over-year declines at sporting-goods retailers every month from September 2024 to February 2025, Stanley's CEO described 'a settling of the hydration category' in March 2025, and searches for 'Stanley' on the ASI promotional-products platform fell about 50% in 2025 while Owala searches rose about 60%.

Still fine if it is literally on their wish list or they already collect Quencher colors, since Stanley is still a well-known brand and the cup itself works as well as it ever did.

Better buy: Owala FreeSip insulated stainless-steel water bottle. Its FreeSip spout lets you sip through a built-in straw or drink straight from the spout, which students cited when 70% of 170 surveyed at one school preferred Owala in March 2025. Holton Scribbler

  • Labubu The Monsters Exciting Macaron Vinyl Face Blind Box

Labubu 91% below its peak in searches

Labubu, drawn by Kasing Lung since 2015 and sold by Pop Mart since 2019, took off after BLACKPINK's Lisa was seen with a Labubu keychain in April 2024, and Pop Mart's revenue roughly tripled in the first half of 2025. The wave then receded: Google Trends interest for Labubu fell from 66 in August 2025 to 6 in March 2026, Pop Mart's US sales were down 45% year on year in March 2026, and by June 2026 discounted secondhand listings appeared within hours of a new release. In August 2026 Pop Mart reported first-half growth of 24%, said The Monsters line (which includes Labubu) fell to about a quarter of sales from a third, and warned it would likely miss its 20% growth goal, with analysts citing 'Labubu fatigue'.

Still fine if they already collect Pop Mart figures or have a specific Labubu series on their list; buy from Pop Mart or an authorized seller, because imitations known as Lafufus spread alongside the craze.

Better buy: Crybaby blind-box figure (Pop Mart). Crybaby became one of Pop Mart's three highest-earning franchises in 2025, and the company is pushing newer characters like it to reduce its reliance on Labubu's The Monsters line. Quartz

  • Squishmallows Cam the Calico Cat 8 inch

Squishmallows 63% below its peak in searches

Squishmallows launched in 2017, exploded on TikTok during the pandemic (more than 4 billion #Squishmallows views by November 2022) and won the Toy Association's overall Toy of the Year award in 2022 with 125 million sold by May 2022. The buzz has cooled even though the product has not vanished: US plush sales fell 8% in 2025 (Circana), and Jellycat, a rival plush brand, grew sales 43% to GBP 450 million in 2025 on social media and collector demand. Squishmallows still has scale, since its 8-inch assortment was Circana's top-selling US plush item and Jazwares says more than 590 million have sold worldwide as of October 2026.

Still fine if they already collect Squishmallows or ask for a specific character, since it is still the best-selling plush and new releases like the October 2026 Cam the Cat streetwear collaboration keep coming.

Better buy: Jellycat plush (for example Horatio the pistachio nut). Jellycat's sales rose 43% in 2025 on social-media popularity and adult collector demand, and it keeps launching quirky new characters such as a pistachio nut named Horatio. ITV

How we picked

We started from what Americans are searching for: monthly US Google searches for more than a hundred gift ideas, from October 2025 to September 2026. We kept the ones teens are actually asking for, then read independent reviews, retailer ratings and brand pages for each to choose the exact version to buy, what goes wrong and who it suits. Every claim on this page links to its source. We don't show prices: they change daily, so check the retailer.

GiftHeat earns a commission when you buy through our links. It doesn't change what we pick, and it's why we tell you when to skip something. More on our method.

Questions people ask

What is the most popular gift for teens this Christmas?
The Nintendo Switch 2 is the most-wanted big gift: about 1.5 million US searches last month, and Nintendo has sold 23.68 million worldwide. For a smaller gift, the Owala FreeSip water bottle is the safest pick.
Are Stanley cups still popular with teens?
Less than before. US searches for Stanley cups are down about 70% from their peak, and the Owala FreeSip has taken over at school. Buy a Stanley only if it's specifically on their list.
Are Labubus still a good gift in 2026?
Only for a teen who already collects them. Searches have fallen about 90% from the peak and Pop Mart itself has warned of slowing growth. A Crybaby figure or a Fuggler is a fresher pick.
What should I buy a teen who has everything?
Something they'll use every day but wouldn't buy themselves: Loop Quiet 2 earplugs for studying and sleep, or a limited-edition Owala or HydroJug colour they can't get anymore.
